On August 23, a new work of art was unveiled on Addis Ababa Square in Leipzig, underlining the close ties between Leipzig and its twin city Addis Ababa. The artwork was unveiled to celebrate the close ties between the two cities since the official twinning in 2004. Since 2002, the Leipzig-Addis Ababa twinning association has promoted exchange between the two cities through various events, trips to Addis Ababa, book readings and cultural and educational projects.
Ethiopian artist Freshwoyen Endrias designed the installation and called her work “Drop of Unity.” Representatives of the City of Leipzig, international delegates, and Leipzig citizens attended the unveiling ceremony to celebrate the long-standing partnership.
At the event, Leipzig's Mayor Burkhard Jung emphasized the importance of city partnerships in promoting intercultural dialogue, economic cooperation, and sustainable urban development. Representatives from Addis Ababa expressed their gratitude for the ongoing cooperation and pointed out that the partnership has facilitated numerous exchanges in education, culture and urban planning. Over the years, both cities have benefited from shared knowledge and resources, further strengthening their bond.
Residents and visitors are invited to view the installation.
