Second Annual UCR-Leipzig Graduate Student Conference (2025)

Call for abstracts

We invite submissions for the second annual UCR-Leipzig graduate student conference to take place at the Villa Tillmanns at the University of Leipzig, Germany, from July 9 to July 10, 2025 (https://www.ga.uni-leipzig.de/graduiertenakademie-leipzig/villa-tillmanns). Our hosts this year are Andrea Kern (Leipzig) and Adrian Haddock (Leipzig) and our co-organizer is Sasha Newton (UCR). The conference will take place within the institutional context of their graduate colloquia.

Our aim is to select three graduate student papers from UCR and three from the University of Leipzig, and to have three talks on each day.

We welcome contributions on all topics in philosophy. Papers will be read ahead of time by all participants so that our time can be focused on discussion.

Submission instructions: Please submit abstracts of 750 to 1,000 words (excluding bibliography). Submissions should be prepared for anonymous review and include a word count. Please supply author name, affiliation, and contact information in a separate file. Abstracts may be in German or in English, but the papers for the event should be written in English. Please send the abstracts by e-mail to Ms. Katharina Krause (katharina.krause(at)uni-leipzig.de).

Submission deadline: March 1st, 2024

Unfortunately we cannot offer travel stipends for this year’s event, but we will continue to look for external funding. However, we encourage graduate students at UCR to apply for funding from the department of philosophy, which offers students up to $750 for conferences abroad (https://philosophy.ucr.edu/graduate-program/funding), and from the Graduate Students Association (GSA), which offers up to $1,100 for events on another continent (https://gsa.ucr.edu/ctg/). These sources are independent of each other: you can get both. We also hope to be able to offer graduate students from UCR private accommodations in Leipzig to reduce their overall costs.

Other conferences in Leipzig around the time of this event:

  • Young Researcher Workshop on Lucy O’Brien’s book on intersubjectivity and recognition – July 3-5
  • Action Network on Work, Life, and Leisure (co-organized by Matthias Haase, UChicago, and Adrian Haddock) - July 17-19
  • Conference on The Significance of Expression (co-organized by Adrian Haddock and Jonas Held, including these speakers: P. Sullivan, J. Shaw, S. Bäckström, A. Haddock, M.v.d. Schaar, D. Finkelstein) July 21-22
