Abstract
Vera Katzenberger has been Junior Professor of Digital Journalism at the Institute of Communication and Media Studies at Leipzig University since April 2024. Her research and teaching focus on innovation and transformation in journalism. Her focus is on digital media and the use of data, artificial intelligence and algorithms in journalism. Her current research focuses on podcasts and audio on demand. Before moving to Leipzig University, she worked as a research assistant at the Institute of Communication Science at the University of Bamberg. Her doctorate deals with skills-oriented training in journalism and media studies.

Junior Professor Dr. Vera Katzenberger is dedicated to empirical research into journalism under the conditions of digitalization. Her research currently focuses on podcasts as a digital entertainment and information medium in journalism. Among other things, she is working on questions relating to production conditions, media content, monetization and marketing approaches and the distribution logic on platforms. Both quantitative and qualitative methods of communication science are used in her research. The empirical approach is supplemented by data-supported approaches from computational communication science. The aim is to transfer the research results to the interested public.
In her teaching, Junior Professor Dr. Vera Katzenberger focuses on the main areas of the Junior Professorship for Digital Journalism, including digital media, artificial intelligence and algorithms. Her courses deal with the transformation in journalism from different perspectives and classify the content with a reflection on concepts and theories from the field of communication science. A research-oriented character and project-based learning characterize her teaching: A high level of application in the form of science-practice transfer and close cooperation with students in project seminars form the core. Her courses offer a practical introduction to both quantitative and qualitative methods.
