The Object of Practical Knowledge
Graduiertenworkshop Ljubljana - Leipzig
What is the formal object of practical knowledge? Unlike theoretical knowledge, which concerns what is the case independently of its being known, practical knowledge is constitutive of what is done – the knower is the source of what is known.
But what, precisely, is thus known? Is it simply the concept of what one does? In acting intentionally, one knows that what one does is good. So is the object of practical knowledge the goodness of what one does? If so, how does this relate to what is concretely done? Does such knowledge presuppose the idea of a natural order that makes moral action possible – the idea of the highest good?
This workshop explores the nature and scope of practical knowledge by addressing questions such as: What distinguishes practical knowledge from other forms of knowledge? Is its object determined by reason or through action? What is its relation to the idea of the highest good?
